from death-energy to life-energy

Fossil fuels, derived from the death of plants and animals millions of years ago, are spewing death and destruction on the plants and animals, water, air and soil of today. We must shift immediately and massively from death-energy to life-energy of sun, water, wind, geothermal and biomass or we will kill life on Earth. Renewable energy is the very life force of the Earth that will flow onward for billions of more years, rather than the carbon remains of dead life that will choke out life. We can make this transition. We will make it. The larger picture is that we have created a civilization based on death that is now killing all of us life forms, based on greed that is now destroying our economies, based on the confusion that humankind is the master of Nature that is now humiliating us, based on raw, vicious power that is now crippling the body-politic and based on the illusion that money is more important than equity, justice and sustainability that is now poisoning our hearts and minds. The good news is that we can awaken from this nightmare. We can regain contact with our deepest nature of empathy, compassion and understanding. We can opt for life and give up our addiction to death. We can create a new civilization based on life and happiness rather than death and suffering. We can do it.

It is becoming clear that the climate crisis that is endangering life on Earth is only one of many manifestations of a whole system transformation of ecology, energy, economics, culture and governance. The civilization based on fossil fuel industrialization within a consumption-production paradigm is coming to an end. Rising out of its ashes will emerge a civilization of renewable energy, sustainable development, environmental protection, an economics based on equity of opportunity and participatory, ethical governance. As Jeremy Rifkin states in his recent book by the same name it will be an empathic civilization. The dislocation, chaos and suffering that this transformation will entail can result in greater sanity, justice, happiness and wellbeing for our species and other forms of life as well. In addition to grieving the loss of the world as we know it, we can celebrate the coming of a new and better world for our descendants. The only other option is one we cannot entertain: refusing to change and spinning into systemic collapse leading to a massive die-back of life on a severly damaged planet. But we still have time. In fact, we have just entered the most Critical Decade in the history of humankind. This is indeed the time, and we are the people to do what is required of us. We can and must reinvent society from the inside out, from our consciousness and compassion manifesting sustainable structures, policies, institutions and lifestyles. Yes, we can!

Human nature and societal design

Our views on human nature predispose a certain designing of societal structures. If human beings are seen as fundamentally selfish, dangerous or even evil, then societal structures must be constructed to protect us from each other. If, however, human beings are viewed as basically empathic and compassionate, then society would be designed in quite a different manner based on cooperation, collaboration and mutuality. Our societies are the way they are because of centuries of collective assumptions concerning human nature. It is utterly possible, in fact it has become a necessity, to reinvent our societies, this time on the basis of principles of equity, justice, sustainability and participation. Humanity will not be able to respond adequately to climate catastrophy, increasing poverty, gender inequality, economic and fiscal distortions, dysfunctional governance processes and the HIV/AIDS pandemic, unless and until we ourselves change our assumptions, perceptions, values, behaviour, cultures and systems, both individually and collectively. We can do this. We must do this, or die as a species along with most other species. The Earth herself will be fine, however. She will continue her journey around the sun and the center of the Milky Way for billions of more years, with evolution taking other, interesting turns and twists. But as for me, I am in love with my species and my fellow/sister species and wish for us long life, health and happiness!

Two questions that are generative for our individual and social lives are “what is humanness?” and “what is development?”. How we answer these question sets everything in a certain trajectory. Is a human being some or all of the following: basically evil; basically compassionate; an animal; a child of God; a star’s way of looking at a star; a chemical-electrical process; sheer mystery; a consumer; a citizen; a cancer on the Earth; utter possibility; a delusional being; the pinacle of evolution? How we each answer this question determines our living and how we collectively answer sets the parameters for our social evolution. Likewise with the question “what is development?” Depending on what we understand a human being to be, an understanding of development follows. Taken together the two questions become one: what is human development?
